San Carlos RV Resort - My Florida Winter Home

We've been spending the past month at San Carlos RV Resort in Fort Myers Beach, FL.  We're here for two months.  This will be our third year staying at San Carlos and its now become our favorite winter roost.  The RV park is relatively small and is about a mile from Fort Myers Beach.  Its situated right before the large "sky bridge" that goes over to Estero Island.  The location makes it easy to walk or ride a bike to stores, restaurants, and the beach

There are several RV parks in the nearby area.  San Carlos is nice RV park that caters to snowbirds.  There's no permanent or transient residents, just retirees escaping the cold and snow for a few months.  RV parks aren't for everyone.  At San Carlos, the sites are very close together and it can look crowded, but it has a great location and the people who run it are terrific to deal with.  The owners do a great job maintaining the park and they are constantly making improvements

All the sites have full hook-ups.  Cable TV is available on certain sites, but the on air TV reception is excellent.  There's free wifi, a nice pool, hot tub, laundry, a rec room and regular weekly activities.  It also has a boat launch, marina docks, and kayak rentals.

Here's a video I put together that shows what the RV park is like. The first segment was taken with my new Panorama G DashCam.  The camera is small, attaches to the windshield with a suction mount, and shoots HD 1080p video.  It has a built in GPS to capture speed and location.  It records in MPEG 4 format to a SD card. A 32GB card can hold about 4.5 hrs of video,  Its very easy to operate and is great to capture those moments when you're driving and wish you had a camera.  It should come in handy for my future travels this summer.

So far, the weather in January has been very good and we're enjoying our stay.  Its pretty much been shorts and tee shirt type weather.  The NoSeeUm's have been a nuisance but that's been our only complaint.  We've met several new people and have seen several returning guests who we've met from prior years.

We've already signed up to return for next year.  We leave in mid February to go to St Augustine Beach for a couple of weeks and start the next part of our winter sojourn.

  1. Do you think next year you will bring a car?

    1. We're going to experiment with renting a car for a couple days every other week. There's a car rental place just around the corner from the RV park. At $30 per day for a couple days, it the most economical option.
Its really for my wife who misses the freedom of running around in a car. Doubtful that I would tow car for staying at San Carlos. We're so close to everything. Thanks for reading.

  2. Nice place! Enjoyed your post and video. Am I right in thinking that nice of a place is fully booked for a year or so ahead of time? Good to hear you were able to book yours for next year. Your View, by virtue of it's size, actually makes the campsight seems more spacious than where there are class A's side by side. Any more thoughts on whether you'll stick with the View or go the trailer route next year like you mentioned last time?

    1. San Carlos has many returning guests who stay for multiple months and the park caters to these returning guests. If you stay for a couple months or more, you can secure the same site for the following year prior to departing. For Jan, Feb, Mar the park is mostly full with a few sites available for small stays (2-5 days). If you're not a returning guest, then that take reservations for the upcoming winter beginning May st. This gives the returning guests priority to hold their sites. We started out with stays of 2-3 weeks and then went for 2 months. We'll probably stay with the View for next year and continue to study the trailer option. Thanks for reading.

  3. Sounds like a good plan J Dawg. In your note, it says "May st". I'm guessing that's May 1st, right? Found their web site, but it's not spelled out there. Enjoy the rest of your stay there and have a safe trip out west.

  4. Nice video. It came out very clear and steady considering you were driving.

    1. Thanks, Linda. I was concerned that there would be some camera shake, but its nice and smooth even on a bumpy road.

    1. Thanks for commenting. We're really liking our stay at San Carlos. While it is a bit crowded, the people are so nice and the social interaction is great. For us, its a great place to escape winter.
